A Problem With Capitalism

One of the major problems with capitalism is that the profit motive often leads individuals and companies to do things they know are wrong.

The easiest example is a company that dumps toxic waste into the river because that is the cheapest option - as long as nobody finds out about it.

Another example is a health insurance company that does everything possible to deny claims in order to collect money without paying for the services promised.

Many fishing companies know they are threatening th… Continue

Investment Portfolio Looking Much Better

It has been difficult to look at my investment portfolio the past few years. It is hard to contribute money while seeing my overall number going down each month.

Now my investment portfolio is growing again. The market has done really well the past few months which rewards people like me who are heavily invested in stocks.

Hopefully the rally will continue. I know there is a correction in store at some point (and maybe we are seeing it now with the recent weakness), but overall, I think we wil… Continue

I'm Ready For A Global Currency

Doesn't a global currency make sense?

We have a global economy. People, goods, and services are exchanged around the world. Why shouldn't we have a unifromed way to value these exchanges?

I read a report about how some countires use macroeconomic policies to manage the value of their currency. Do we really want countries to be "managing" the value of their currency in a global market?

I want my exchanges of value to be based on what the real or at least perceived value is. Not based on what t… Continue

Worried About The Falling Dollar

I just read an article about how European companies are looking for cheap labor in America. The basic premise of the article was that since the dollar has weakened so much compared to the Euro, labor is now much cheaper in the United States for European companies. The difference in the exchange rate also works the other way when Americans travel to Europe and discover that everything costs 20 - 30% more.

This got me thinking and a little worried because almost all of my investment port

So lets say there are only three people in the world and one of them is the government. The government turns to the other two and says "I have 10 dollars to give away, but I don't know who to choose." One says, "please give me the $10, as I have no…

I agree. I still like capitalism, but it is important to understand the negative consequences and the limitations of the system. I agree with James that the biggest problem with capitalism is that it can't operate on its own because the market lead…

Another problem is that capitalism make people to consume more goods then they need. And people need make money to satisfy unlimited needs.

A few things: * Republicans are trying to argue that the economy isn't getting better. I see it from both the politicians and the right wing media outlets. The economy is now adding jobs each month instead of losing hundreds of thousands of jobs ea…

I don't think any politician from any side of the isle would argue for a recession. That is ludicrous. The idea to maintain a recession for the sake of political gain, at a time when the incumbent’s popularity is so low, come on? The theory of “rat…

Some people are saying we might enter a period of deflation. Why is deflation bad? If inflation causes things to cost more over time, does deflation cause things to cost less over time? If inflation is usually target to be around 2%, would a defl…
